What is Worldcoin?

Worldcoin was initiated by a group associated with Sam Altman to address a specific problem: proving an online account belongs to a real person rather than a machine. That problem grows more pressing as AI-generated content becomes harder to distinguish.

Its most contested method is scanning the iris with dedicated hardware to create a unique identifier. Participants receive WLD tokens.

Risks to weigh: collecting biometric data has prompted data-protection authorities in several countries — including some in Europe, plus Kenya and Spain — to open investigations or order suspensions. This is the project category with the highest privacy-related legal risk, and personal-data rules are tightening in many places, including Vietnam.
