USDC is a stablecoin pegged to the US dollar, issued by Circle. As with Tether, each USDC in circulation is backed by reserves, but Circle positions USDC around tighter regulatory compliance: reserves are held in cash and short-term US Treasury bills, with regular attestation reports from an independent accounting firm.
USDC is widely used in decentralised finance applications and by institutions that want a stablecoin with a clear regulatory profile. Functionally it serves the same purpose as USDT: temporarily holding value and moving funds between platforms.
Risks to weigh: in March 2023 USDC lost its peg and fell to around $0.87 when part of its reserves was trapped at the collapsing Silicon Valley Bank. The price recovered within days once regulators stepped in, but the episode showed that stablecoins backed by bank deposits still carry traditional banking-system risk.
