Tether (USDT) is a stablecoin — a crypto asset designed to hold a steady value around one US dollar rather than fluctuating like Bitcoin or Ethereum. It is issued by Tether Limited, which states that every USDT in circulation is backed by corresponding reserves, mainly US Treasury bills and short-term money-market instruments.
USDT has the highest trading volume of any stablecoin. Its main use is not investment returns but as an intermediate instrument: traders use it to step out of price volatility without withdrawing to fiat, or to move value between exchanges faster and more cheaply than an international bank transfer.
Risks to weigh: unlike Bitcoin, USDT depends entirely on a centralised issuer. If the reserves are insufficient or illiquid, the peg can break. Tether has previously been penalised by US regulators over inaccurate statements about its reserves. Stablecoins also face the heaviest regulatory pressure of any crypto category in many jurisdictions.
