Solana is a blockchain launched in 2020, designed to handle a high volume of transactions at very low cost — typically under a cent per transaction. That is the main difference from Ethereum, where fees can reach tens of dollars at peak times.
To achieve that speed, Solana combines staking with its own method of timestamping that lets validators process transactions in parallel rather than sequentially. The network is widely used for high-frequency trading, gaming applications and NFT marketplaces — cases where high fees would make the model unworkable.
Risks to weigh: Solana suffered several complete outages during 2021–2022, one lasting more than ten hours, leaving users unable to transact. Hardware requirements for validators are higher than on many other networks, which limits the number of independent operators. The ecosystem was also hit hard when FTX — a major investor in Solana — collapsed in late 2022.
