What is XRP?
XRP is the native coin of the XRP Ledger, a distributed ledger launched in 2012 and associated with the company Ripple. Its original aim was cross-border payments: instead of routing money through several correspondent banks over several days, XRP acts as an intermediate asset to settle a transfer in seconds at very low cost.
The XRP Ledger does not use mining. The network reaches consensus through a set of validating servers, which makes it fast and energy-efficient but less decentralised. All 100 billion XRP were created at launch, with no further issuance.
Risks to weigh: Ripple and the US Securities and Exchange Commission spent years in litigation over whether XRP is a security — a process that led several exchanges to suspend XRP listings at times. A large share of supply is still held by Ripple and released on a schedule, creating potential selling pressure.
