What is POL (ex-MATIC)?

POL is the native coin of the Polygon network, renamed from MATIC during an infrastructure upgrade. Polygon is a scaling network for Ethereum, processing transactions at very low fees and anchoring results back to the main chain.

Many large brands chose Polygon to pilot blockchain applications, partly for low cost and partly for full compatibility with Ethereum's developer tooling. POL pays network fees and is staked for validation.

Risks to weigh: the MATIC-to-POL migration is a significant technical change with a period where both tokens coexist, which confuses users. Competition in Ethereum scaling is intense, with many newer layer-two networks offering equally low costs.
