What is Polkadot?

Polkadot launched in 2020, founded by Gavin Wood, one of Ethereum's co-founders. Its core idea addresses blockchains being unable to talk to each other: each network is its own island.

Polkadot runs a central chain that handles security, with projects attaching as parallel chains. Each parallel chain has its own rules but shares the security layer and can exchange data with the others. DOT is used for staking, governance and bidding for parallel-chain slots.

Risks to weigh: the architecture is complex and harder for developers to approach. Slot auctions are costly for smaller projects. The interoperability problem Polkadot targets now has several competing answers, and cross-chain bridges have been the target of major attacks.
