What is Optimism?
Optimism is an Ethereum layer-two network, among the first to apply the model of processing transactions off the main chain and posting aggregate results back to Ethereum for security, cutting fees substantially.
The project pursues a "superchain" vision — a network of layer-two chains sharing the same underlying technology and able to communicate seamlessly, rather than each layer-two being its own island. Several other major projects have adopted Optimism's open-source technology to build their own chains.
Risks to weigh: withdrawing assets to Ethereum through the official route takes about a week because of the challenge period. The network still relies on a centralised sequencer, and the layer-two segment faces intense competition.
