What is Litecoin?

Litecoin appeared in 2011, created by Charlie Lee, a former Google engineer, from Bitcoin's codebase. Its founder called it "silver" to Bitcoin's "gold": the same principles but faster and cheaper for everyday transactions.

Blocks arrive every 2.5 minutes rather than Bitcoin's 10, so confirmation is four times quicker. Maximum supply is 84 million units, four times Bitcoin's. Litecoin is often used as a testing ground for upgrades before they reach Bitcoin.

Risks to weigh: it is among the oldest coins but has changed little functionally over the years. Its role as "a faster Bitcoin" is directly contested by many newer networks with far better speed and fees.
