Internet Computer launched in 2021 with an ambition unlike most projects: not just processing financial transactions but running complete web applications on a decentralised network, replacing traditional cloud servers.
Applications running directly on the network can serve users through a browser with no separate server. In theory this removes dependence on large cloud providers.
Risks to weigh: the project is ambitious but real-world adoption has lagged initial expectations. The ICP price fell steeply after launch, partly because of the supply release schedule. Validator hardware requirements are high, limiting the number of independent operators.
