What is Hedera?

Hedera uses a data structure different from a traditional blockchain, called a directed acyclic hashgraph. Rather than ordering transactions into a chain of blocks, nodes exchange information in a gossip pattern, allowing parallel processing at very low and predictable cost.

Its governance is distinctive: the network is run by a council of large corporations, each operating a node. This provides stability and clear accountability, suiting enterprises that want identifiable counterparties.

Risks to weigh: the council model is itself the controversy — it is far less decentralised than an open network. Critics argue it resembles a shared database more than a blockchain in the original sense.
