Filecoin addresses decentralised data storage. Instead of uploading files to one company's servers, users pay to store data across a global network of independent providers, each pledging storage capacity in exchange for FIL tokens.
The network continuously verifies that storage providers actually hold the data they committed to, through cryptographic proofs, and penalises fraud when detected.
Risks to weigh: storage costs from large centralised providers keep falling, creating competitive pressure. Real-world usage for important data remains modest relative to the scale of pledged storage capacity.
