Ethereum launched in 2015, initiated by Vitalik Buterin. Where Bitcoin mainly records transfers of value, Ethereum extends that idea into a platform that can run programs — known as smart contracts. These are pieces of code that execute automatically when conditions are met, without a third party guaranteeing the outcome.
Most decentralised finance applications, NFT marketplaces and many other crypto assets are built on Ethereum or networks compatible with it. ETH serves two roles: paying transaction fees on the network, and being staked to help validate blocks. In September 2022 Ethereum moved from mining to staking, cutting its electricity use by more than 99%.
Risks to weigh: fees rise sharply when the network is busy, sometimes tens of dollars for a simple action. Bugs in smart contracts have caused losses in the hundreds of millions of dollars and are usually irreversible. Ethereum also faces direct competition from newer networks that are faster and cheaper.
