What is Ethereum Classic?
Ethereum Classic is the original Ethereum chain, continuing after the 2016 event. When an exploit in the DAO project drained a large amount of funds, the Ethereum community chose to intervene by reversing transactions to refund those affected.
A group objected, arguing the ledger must stay immutable regardless of outcome — the "code is law" principle. They continued the original chain as Ethereum Classic, while the intervening branch became today's Ethereum.
Risks to weigh: Ethereum Classic still uses proof-of-work mining, and with modest hashing power the network has suffered repeated majority attacks, where an attacker controls more than half the mining power to reverse transactions. Its ecosystem and developer community are far smaller than Ethereum's.
