What is Ethena?

Ethena issues USDe, a dollar-pegged asset whose mechanism differs sharply from a conventional stablecoin. Rather than holding cash reserves, Ethena holds crypto assets while opening matching short positions in derivatives markets, so the two sides offset and value stays stable.

The mechanism also generates yield from funding-rate differentials in derivatives markets, which is its main draw.

Risks to weigh: this is a complex product, not a cash-backed stablecoin. Yield depends on derivatives-market conditions — when funding rates turn negative for a sustained period, the mechanism comes under pressure. The model also relies on centralised derivatives venues where the hedges sit. Buyers should understand how USDe differs from cash-backed stablecoins before participating.
