Dogecoin was created in late 2013 as a joke, taking its name from the Shiba Inu meme circulating at the time. Technically it is a variant of Litecoin, using Bitcoin-style mining but with faster block confirmation and low fees.
Unlike Bitcoin, Dogecoin has no supply cap: roughly 5 billion new coins are created each year. Its practical use is mainly small transfers and tipping on social platforms. Its large, committed community is the project's most substantial asset.
Risks to weigh: Dogecoin has almost no active technical roadmap and solves no problem that other networks do not handle better. Its price is heavily influenced by public figures on social media, and has repeatedly moved tens of percent in a day on a single post. Continuously growing supply also creates long-term downward pressure.
