Dai is a dollar-pegged stablecoin that works quite differently from Tether or USDC. Instead of a company holding cash reserves, Dai is created when users lock crypto assets as collateral in smart contracts — the whole process happens on-chain and is publicly verifiable.
To maintain value, collateral must exceed the Dai issued against it. When collateral prices fall below a threshold, the system liquidates automatically to hold the peg.
Risks to weigh: the mechanism depends on smart contracts and on prices supplied by oracles; a failure in either can break the peg. Over time a substantial share of collateral has itself been centralised stablecoins, so the decentralisation is less pure than the original design.
