What is Chainlink?
Chainlink addresses a basic limitation of smart contracts: they cannot reach data outside the blockchain on their own. A crop-insurance contract needs actual rainfall figures; a lending application needs collateral prices — but a blockchain cannot fetch that information by itself.
Chainlink is a network of independent nodes that bring outside data onto blockchains, a role known as an oracle. Multiple nodes supply the same data point and the results are aggregated, so the outcome does not depend on any single source. The LINK token pays these nodes and serves as a stake that holds them accountable.
Risks to weigh: Chainlink is not its own blockchain but a service running on other networks, so its value depends on applications continuing to choose it. Faulty oracle data has caused major losses in decentralised finance. It is also a field with several direct competitors.
