What is Cardano?
Cardano is a blockchain launched in 2017 by Charles Hoskinson, one of Ethereum's co-founders. Its distinguishing approach is process: major changes are grounded in peer-reviewed academic research before deployment, rather than shipping fast and fixing later.
Cardano has used staking from the start, so its energy use is low. ADA holders can delegate to operating pools and earn rewards without moving or locking up their assets. The network has supported smart contracts since 2021.
Risks to weigh: the cautious approach means Cardano ships features more slowly than many competitors, and its ecosystem of working applications remains small next to Ethereum or Solana. The gap between expectations for the project and actual usage is the most notable risk when assessing ADA.
