What is Bitcoin?
Bitcoin is the first crypto asset, launched in 2009 based on a technical paper published in 2008 under the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto. It is a peer-to-peer payment system that works without banks or intermediaries: every transaction is recorded on a public ledger maintained and verified by thousands of computers worldwide.
What sets Bitcoin apart from most other assets is a fixed supply capped at 21 million units that no one can increase. The rate of new issuance halves roughly every four years. This predictable scarcity is why many treat Bitcoin as "digital gold" for storing value rather than as an everyday payment method — network fees and confirmation times make it impractical for small purchases.
Risks to weigh: the price is extremely volatile, with drawdowns of more than 70% from previous highs that took years to recover. Bitcoin produces no cash flow the way equities or bonds do, so its value rests entirely on what others are willing to pay. If you self-custody, losing your private key means losing the asset permanently, with no recovery process.
