What is BNB?

BNB began in 2017 as the exchange token of Binance, offering trading-fee discounts to holders. It later became the native coin of BNB Chain — a separate blockchain capable of running smart contracts with fees considerably lower than Ethereum's.

BNB now has three main uses: fee discounts on the Binance exchange, paying transaction fees on BNB Chain, and taking part in programmes run across the Binance ecosystem. Binance periodically buys back and burns BNB, gradually reducing total supply.

Risks to weigh: BNB's value is tightly bound to Binance's operations and legal standing. In 2023 Binance agreed to pay penalties and change its leadership under a settlement with US authorities. This is concentration risk: a regulatory action aimed at the issuing company can directly affect the token, unlike networks with no company behind them.
