What is Avalanche?

Avalanche launched in 2020 with a focus on time to finality: transactions are considered irreversible within about a second, considerably faster than many other networks.

Its architectural distinction is splitting into three chains for three purposes: one for asset exchange, one for smart contracts, one for network governance and validation. Avalanche also lets organisations create custom subnets with their own rules, aimed at enterprises needing a controlled environment.

Risks to weigh: its application ecosystem is smaller than Ethereum's or Solana's. The multi-chain architecture is flexible but makes the user experience more complex. The enterprise subnet niche has many competitors.
