What is Arbitrum?

Arbitrum is an Ethereum layer-two network launched in 2021. It addresses Ethereum's high fees by batching many transactions processed off the main chain, then posting the aggregate result back to Ethereum for storage and security.

Fees drop sharply compared with transacting directly on Ethereum, while still inheriting the main network's security. Applications written for Ethereum move to Arbitrum with almost no code changes, so the ecosystem grew quickly.

Risks to weigh: withdrawing assets from Arbitrum to Ethereum through the official route takes about a week because of the challenge period. The network still relies on a centralised sequencer, which the project is progressively decentralising. Ethereum's layer-two segment has many direct competitors.
