What is Aave?

Aave is a decentralised lending protocol, launched in 2017 as ETHLend and renamed in 2018. Users deposit assets into shared pools to earn interest, or post collateral to borrow a different asset — all run by smart contracts, with no bank approving an application.

Interest rates adjust automatically with each pool's supply and demand. Aave popularised flash loans: borrowing and repaying within a single transaction with no collateral, used for arbitrage operations.

Risks to weigh: loans must be over-collateralised, and when collateral prices fall sharply, positions are liquidated automatically and the borrower loses the collateral. Smart-contract bugs in decentralised finance have caused losses in the hundreds of millions of dollars and are usually irreversible.
